Watching a movie with your sweetheart is the best
thing you can do after a tough day at work. But how frustrating is that
moment when you lay comfortably on the sofa and your favorite video
player that has so long served you every time goes crazy and crashes
right at the beginning of the movie? This is the time when you should
probably start looking for an alternative.
MPlayer is probably
the software you’re looking for, since developers have specifically
designed it to be compatible with the most popular video and audio
formats currently in use. If we are to trust the developers, the
application comes with support for 192 video and 85 audiocodecs.
But
MPlayer is not an ordinary multimedia player. Nooo, it is much more
than that. And you’ll see this as soon as you double-click the
installer. The application comprises optimized builds for every CPU
type, so that it could work at full speed, without any glitch no matter
if you’re using an AMD Athlon XP, Intel Pentium III or Intel Pentium 4.
Don’t worry if you’re not a geek, the installer will do the whole
hardware detection job, which means you will definitely receive the
right build.
Installing the software however takes a while, no
matter how fast your computer is. During our test, we had to wait more
than 1 minute until all files have been copied on the hard-disk, plus
some extra time until MPlayer finished “optimizing the executable file”.
The
interface of the player is clean and simple, which is an important
thing when talking about a powerful tool that should be able to open
most multimedia formats. All functions are displayed in the bottom menu,
while additional options are available via the right click straight in
the main window of the app.
The settings menu is well organized,
so every time you’ll look for a certain option, you will easily find it
in the appropriate subcategory.
As for the player itself, it
worked great during our tests and it really managed to open all formats
we had on our computers. Plus, it’s impressively light on computer
resources, which of course is a plus, especially for older machines.
The
bottom line is as simple as it gets: try it. It’s a powerful tool, it
is surprisingly efficient and, above all, it’s free. So why not giving
it a shot?
